STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
STEAM adds Arts to the mix.
STEM aims to encourage inquiring minds, logical reasoning, creativity and collaboration skills. Through enquiry-based learning, concepts develop through projects and problem-solving, underpinned by 21st Century access to information and rigorous, multichannel development of knowledge.
Research, design, development and refinement; students learn this cycle which is so fundamental to our everyday lives.
Students are encouraged to engage in their own learning by keeping journals and portfolios and showcasing their work to improve their articulation of the concepts learned.
Even though there has been progress towards increasing the participation of women and girls in higher education, they are still underrepresented in STEM fields. The perspectives brought to these professions by women and girls is increasingly recognised as being crucial to our continued economic and environmental development.
